Why Ryan Williams Wasnt Targeted in the Iron Bowl | DeBoer explains (2025)

Alabama's Iron Bowl: Why Didn't Ryan Williams Get the Ball?

It's the question on every Crimson Tide fan's mind: Why wasn't star receiver Ryan Williams targeted even once in the Iron Bowl? Despite playing 38 snaps in Alabama's hard-fought 27-20 victory over Auburn, the sophomore sensation didn't see a single pass thrown his way. That's a head-scratcher, especially considering his impressive freshman year. But what gives?

Coach Kalen DeBoer addressed the elephant in the room, stating that Williams' lack of involvement was simply a matter of how the game unfolded. "He was out there. There's nothing to read into there at all. There were opportunities where the ball could've found him," DeBoer explained. "The plays that... it's not like they're designed specifically for him. That's really not how a lot of our offense is. There might be screens and things like that that are intentionally trying to get (players) touches. But as far as pass concepts, we just didn't get to him in the route, or things like that."

DeBoer emphasized the team's intent to utilize Williams' playmaking abilities. "We've got to be intentional because he's a playmaker for us. The ball just found some other guys and they made plays, like you saw with Isaiah Horton."

A Look Back at Williams' Performance

Let's not forget Williams' explosive debut season in 2024, where he led the team with 865 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches. This year, however, injuries and some drops have hindered his impact. He's still managed 40 catches for 598 yards, but his role has diminished in the latter part of the season.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could the game plan have been adjusted due to Williams' recent struggles? Or was it simply a matter of other receivers getting open?
