Spain's 2025 Short Course Euros Team: Meet the Swimmers and Medal Contenders (2025)

Get ready for some thrilling aquatic action as Spain gears up for the 2025 Short Course European Championships in Lublin, Poland! The Royal Spanish Federation of Swimming (RFEN) has unveiled its roster, and it's a powerhouse team that's sure to make waves.

A Diverse and Talented Squad

Spain is sending a total of 25 swimmers, comprising 14 men and 11 women, to compete in this year-end competition. The team is a true representation of the country's swimming prowess, with athletes from various regions and clubs. Leading the charge is Catalonia's CN Terrassa, which boasts an impressive six qualifiers, the highest among all clubs.

Meet the Spanish Men's Team

  • Carles Coll
  • Luca Hoek
  • Cristobal Vargas
  • Isak Fernandez
  • Diego Mira
  • Hugo Gonzalez
  • Mario Mendez
  • Eudald Tarrats
  • Miguel Martinez
  • Arbidel Gonzalez
  • Miguel Perez-Godoy
  • Ivan Martinez
  • Cesar Castro
  • Sergio de Celis

And the Women's Team

  • Estrella Tonrath
  • Maria Daza
  • Carla Carron
  • Ainhoa Campabadal
  • Alba Vazquez
  • Paula Gonzalez
  • Laura Cabanes
  • Angela Martinez
  • Maria de Valdes
  • Carmen Weiler
  • Emma Carrasco

Every swimmer who met the RFEN's stringent criteria to qualify for this prestigious meet has made the cut, except for Nayara Pineda. Pineda, a sprint breaststroker, hasn't competed since the Euro Juniors in the summer, where she initially qualified for the Lublin team. Her absence, along with no qualifiers in the women's 50 or 100 breaststroke at the nationals, leaves a slight vulnerability in this discipline for the relays. However, the team has some strong contenders like Alba Vazquez, the 200 breaststroke champion, and the versatile Emma Carrasco, who could step up to fill this gap.

Spain's Medal Hopes

As of now, Spain boasts an impressive five athletes ranked within the world's top ten (and Europe's top five) in their respective events. One of these stars is none other than Carles Coll, the reigning 200 breaststroke world champion. While securing another gold this year will be a tough challenge, especially with the emergence of world record holder Casper Corbeau, Coll is definitely a strong contender for a podium finish.

Open water specialists Angela Martinez and Maria de Valdes have proven their mettle in the short pool this weekend, clocking the third and fourth fastest mile times on the continent, respectively. Newly-crowned 400 IM national record holder Diego Mira and 200 butterfly ace Laura Cabanes are also among Spain's top-ranked athletes, both ranked third among Europeans in their events.

Additionally, Hugo Gonzalez, Carmen Weiler, and Emma Carrasco bring a wealth of international experience to the team, having made appearances in Olympic or World Championship finals. Young sprint freestyle sensations Luca Hoek and Maria Daza, who both medaled individually at the Euro Juniors this summer, are expected to be key players on the Spanish relays.

So, as Spain prepares to dive into the 2025 Short Course Euros, the question remains: Can this talented squad bring home the medals? And will they be able to overcome the challenges they face in certain disciplines? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: these athletes are ready to make their mark on the international stage.

What do you think? Who are your medal favorites for Spain? Let's discuss in the comments!
